Our research group is part of the Liver Unit in the Department of Medicine. Our research focuses on Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC), a worldwide leading cause of cancer related death. My overall goal is to define the immunosuppressive mechanisms behind HCC development and translate findings into novel treatments for patients with HCC.
Previously, we have reported the immuno suppressive nature of serum from patients with HCC and that the soluble portion of the IL2 receptor (sCD25) has novel suppressive properties. We also showed that HCC upregulates the Treg compartment with enhanced suppressive porperties. Our current work is looking at the immune effects of the multikinase inhibitor sorafenib (the only approved drug for HCC treatment)
